Liam Lynch Memorial Walk – April 6th
Momentous moments in history happen in ordinary places and even after the passing of time some places and experiences can still be caught. Many are aware of the final movements of General Liam Lynch on April 10th 1923. But what of his movements the previous day, when he walked from Glasha near Fourmilewater Church to Croan, between Newcastle and Goatenbridge? You can walk the route most likely taken on this day by General Lynch and his men, experiencing what it would have been like to travel quiet country roads in early Spring, knowing that every sound in the distance could very likely be troops searching for you.
A group will be taking this route from Fourmilewater to Croan on Saturday April 6th. The group will meet in Newcastle Village Community Centre at 12.30pm and will be bussed to Fourmilewater at 1.00pm. The walk is approximately 14km and should take about 4 hours, ending at the site of Bill Holuihan’s house, wjhich Lynch left to start his walk over the Knockmealdown Mountains. There will be a bus from this point back to Newcastle.
The walk will be predominantly on roads and tracks. Bring good footwear, raingear, a fully charged mobile phone, food, water and a sense of adventure. Soup will be served at the end of the walk and there is a small fee to cover the bus and refreshments.
